Seperation of Spirituality & Medicine

E-mail Print PDF

There is much confusion out there about the work of a Sangoma as compared to the work of an Inyanga.  In a lot of ways, we who practice as both are the cause for this confusion.  In the past, a Sangoma was one person.  The Sangoma would look into your life, tell you the issues and then recommend that you go to the Inyanga for the required medicinal treatment.  These days, you visit a Sangoma who will also dispense medicines to you.  It is convenient I agree, but I also believe it is the reason that African Traditional Medicines are not as respected as they should.  Let me explain myself.

Could you renounce worldly possessions?

E-mail Print PDF

I was pondering this question recently as a result of the book I'm reading now called "Autobiography of a Yogi".  One of the common facets of spiritual growth is being a renunciate.  What this is is someone who has renounced worldly pleasures and excesses.  This includes celibacy, possessions etc. I think its particularly appropriate to be discussing this as those of Islamic faith are fasting right now.  I also know a lot of none-Muslims who do join in during this time of prayer and self control.

One of the Yogi's states though that it is not renounciation when it is done because you have no choice e.g if you suddenly become broke and only then you decide to renounce wealth and pray. I know people who at Lent say they will give up sweets so they can also lose weight.  Which brings me to my question.  Can you decide to stop doing something as a means of exploring your own spiritual journey on a more intense level or not?

Sources of Inspiration

E-mail Print PDF

I read somewhere (and can testify to this as true) that inspiration can come from anyone or anywhere.  You can read something and it resonates with you such that it causes you to make an action in your life immediately.  That is why you can meditate or reflect on Bible passages, non fiction books, true life stories and all sorts of texts that we regularly come into contact with.

Music can also be an incredible source of inspiration. I am inspired by hearing a track by Micheal Jackson called "Keep the faith" for instance.   Its not the only one, but it definitely gets me up when things are down.  There's a hymn from the Shembe Nazereth church called "Amathalente neziphiwo" which means Talents and Gifts, it goes on to say that they should be used by the Creator.  Emadlozini I like "Ngihawukele Thonga lami" which is a plea for mercy and help from Amadlozi.

Family Ties

E-mail Print PDF

One of the first questions people ask when they are in a consultation and they hear of their guides they want to know who the person is expecting to know them even if only from conversations at home.  This is not often the case though because when it comes to family history, we all tend to know only our mother's surname and our father's surname and that is it.

Amadlozi

It is important that we each investigate the full family tree and its roots.  We are the convergence of lots and lots of  people.  At each level, there is a new family added with the maternal side of the family.  It has been interesting to here someone call themselves a particular surname which on investigation is actually their grandfather's mother's surname and not their grandfather's father because the grandfather was born out of wedlock and no damages were paid for him.

Visions of floods

E-mail Print PDF

Last night I woke uo with a vision of flooding which was quite bad.  This is the second such vision, the first one showed the devestation in the rural areas which were quite badly affected by the floods.  Today's one was about the city being flooded.  The floods were bad on the roads especially.

Warning

Once the heavy rains are on the way, there's not much to do.  But I would warn people to take extra precautions especially on the raods (we all know that the drainage is bad where there are new developments).  If you have a home emakhaya, make sure that they have put in some kind of drainage to direct the water away from the main homestead.  If you own a home and you've been ignoring that leaking roof, sort it out because you will regret it when its too late!
